The 12 is McDonald’s new premium chicken sandwich. It comes in Crispy or Grilled chicken. I already tried the 12 Grilled and really enjoyed it, you can read my review here. Just to bring you up to speed, this is a premium crispy chicken patty with a white cheddar cheese slice, leaf lettuce, tomato, with some bbq mayo all on a fancy bun.
If you want that in marketing speak, here it is:
Grilled or crispy seasoned Canadian chicken breast, topped with white processed cheddar cheese, crisp leaf lettuce, fresh tomato, and applewood smoke seasoned sauce, on a sesame and poppy seed glazed bun. It’s a satisfying sandwich you’ll feel good about.
First, let me just get it out of the way that I don’t love McDonalds new “premium” crispy chicken patty. It’s not a full chicken breast, but it does have some visible grain. Sadly, I think they are on the meat glue. And look, I’m not saying I’m above some meat glue, I’ve had my fair share of McChicken’s and Jr. Chickens. My real problem is when they try to pass it off as something special. This is McDonald’s ‘best’ crispy chicken patty on a $5.99 a-la-carte sandwich. I’d prefer they do what they need to do to keep a real battered chicken breast. Wendy’s can still pull it off. Anyways, rant over.
This is a nice looking chicken sandwich. The bun lots of tasty looking bits on it. There is a nub of uniformly shaped chicken hanging out the side. I am a sucker for a slice of tomato on the premium chicken sandwich, and for the season, McDonald’s delivered a nice product.
Biting into the sandwich, I found the chicken breading had a nice little seasoning to it. The veggies and sauce kept it moist. I found the cheese and sauce flavour didn’t stand out as well as they did on the grilled version. I think the batter flavour just covered them up a little bit. Overall a tasty chicken sandwich, but with the crippled patty and the quiet cheese and mayo, I will only give it a 6.5/10.
