A&W recently gave us something new to try with the Spicy Habanero Chicken Burger. This is their signature chubby chicken with a spicy breading instead of their classic batter. It’s topped with lettuce, tomato, and a habanero sauce all on a classic sesame seed bun. No cheese or fancy onions on this, just a classic spicy chicken sandwich. It seems like a good direct competitor to the Wendy’s Spicy Chicken, which is really the only long running premium spicy chicken sandwich. Its also a really good chicken sandwich, so lets see how it compares shall we.
Now this sandwich is not for the faint of heart. The habanero sauce is a white cream sauce with little red / orange flakes of what looks to be habanero peppers in it. It is spicy and rich and delicious. It, along with the spicy breading, has a nice solid level of heat without getting scary “why are my lips tingling” hot. I really enjoyed this sandwich. The lettuce and tomato were good and helped bring a little coolness. My only real complaint was the size of the chicken patty. I felt it was a hint on the small size and not as premium as Wendy’s single piece of breast meat chicken patter. Overall solid spicy sandwich, I’ll give this a 7.5/10
