Review: A&W Chicken Buddy Burger

When I drove by A&W and saw the sign for the Chicken Buddy Burger I was intrigued.  I am a big fan of the regular Buddy Burger, so knew I had to see what other buddy A&W had come up with.  This has a buddy chicken patty, pickles, mayonnaise on the soft small bun.  Like the Buddy Burger this comes in both a single and double, which is a rare treat for a chicken burger.  We obviously had to try both.

The chicken seems like a pretty good quality patty. Nice visible chicken grain in the center. They are advertising it as antibiotic free. The batter was crispy and has a nice mild but present flavour.  It’s somewhere in between the neutral taste of the neutral BK crispy chicken Jr. and the peppery McDonald’s Jr. chicken.

They were both slightly heavy on mayo, which I personally like but some people might not enjoy. There was 3 or 4 pickles on each sandwich. The pickles were mild and really good. I think A&W was inspired by the Chick-fil-a Chicken Sandwich that has just pickles, which McDonald’s USA has their own copy cat sandwich with it’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich.

I found the single pretty good, but preferred the double, with its higher meat to bun and toppings ratio. But on the other hand Helena preferred the single. Either way, it’s a pair of tasty mini chicken sandwiches. They aren’t the cheapest value chicken sandwiches at $2.50 and $3.50 each, but the premium chicken patty justifies the cost. I would give the single an 8/10 and the double 9/10. Tasty little chicken sandwiches.

I did not like the buddy burger. The chicken was good but the bun was soggy. I do not like pickles on my chicken so held the pickles. The chicken needed crisp lettuce to give it some crunch. Will not purchase again until you can substitute lettuce for pickles.

Hey Carmel, I can definitely see that not everyone would enjoy the pickles on the chicken buddy burger. I bet they would let you get lettuce instead of pickles. At least the mini chicken patty was tasty!

My husband and I recently had the single chicken buddy burger and we were very disappointed in the quality. The poster illustrates a big patty with a smallish bun. We totally had the opposite. The bun definitely overpowered the meat. Actually you could not see the patty when we opened the packet. So….we would only rate it as a 4 out of 10.
